Opposition leader accuses government of not intervening in market to control rising commodity prices

The state government should give up the extra income it receives due to rising fuel prices, opposition leader VD Satheesan.

Speaking to the media here on Sunday, Mr Satheesan said the state government was happy with the fuel price increase as it brought additional revenue to its coffers.

The opposition did not demand to lower the tax on fuel prices, but to give up the additional revenue that the government had received due to higher prices. The government received additional tax revenue to the tune of ₹6,000 crore as such, he said. He accused the government of failing to intervene in the market to control rising commodity prices.

Mr Satheesan felt that the LDF poll manifesto for the Assembly constituency of Thrikkakara was an attempt to mislead the people. The government has done very little for constituency development. It was the UDF governments led by K. Karunakaran, AK Antony and Oommen Chandy that implemented development projects in the district, he said.

He also criticized the government for what he said was “facilitating PC George to avoid arrest”. The government, which had not arrested Mr George earlier, is trying to give the impression that he will be arrested as the by-election approaches, he said.

The UDF will stand with the survivor in the actor’s rape case, and any attempt to derail the police investigation into the case will be resisted, Satheesan said.
